Personal Values for Reflection When Considering Collaborations

Successful collaborations ultimately require that collaborating partners are aligned in their core values. As in all relationships, when the parties agree about core values, they can overcome obstacles that naturally arise and create something greater together than they can alone. These are my core values in considering potential collaborations; what are yours?

• Love of the State of Israel—ahavat medinat yisrael. Create a central place in every Jewish organization for the State of Israel, which is a powerful generator of energy for Jews throughout the globe.

• Respect for all people—k’vod ha-briot. Honor the dignity, equality, and uniqueness of all people.

• Spirituality—ruchaniyut. Live in relationship with what came before us, what surrounds us, and what will come after us, with gratitude for the past and responsibility for the future.

• Love of the Jewish people—ahavat yisrael. Unconditionally accept people wherever they are in their Jewish development, remembering that Jewish development, a subcategory of human development, is an ongoing process.

• Defining people in—keruv. Strive to invite people into Jewish life, especially non-Jews who have Jewish family members, instead of drawing lines of exclusion.

• Respecting the diversity of the Jewish community—shiv’im panim la-torah. Embrace diversity in generations, family structure, racial background, and sexual orientation. These difference are a blessing. This diversity should be reflected in the leadership, programs, and processes of organizations.

• Humility—tzneut lekhet. Avoid the arrogance of proclaiming that one expression of Jewish life is the only correct way, and remain open to new expressions that may ultimately strengthen the Jewish future.

• Personal relationships—panim-el-panim. Seek to grow in our relationships with others, because when we deepen relationships, we grow individually and foster growth in others as well. A community rich in relationships is the wellspring of our creativity as a people.

• Contraction of self—tzimtzum. Know when to limit your presence so that others can step forward and flourish.

• Joyful living—simcha shel mitzvah. Celebrate the wonder of life and cultivate gratitude.

• Responsibility—areyvut. Commit to making the world a better place now and for future generations.

• Integrity—shelaymut. Be whole with yourself. You will increase chances of developing fruitful relationships—and you will be a happier person!
